Despite competition from other machines such as machining centres or multi-spindle automatic lathes, the revolving transfer machine is still being used by series manufacturers. Also called rotary transfer machine, the older models were always cam-controlled, while modern revolving transfer machines are equipped with CNC controls. An indexing table (rotary indexing table) moves the workpiece cyclically through the various stations, such as those for turning, milling, drilling, etc. This means that smaller standard parts can be produced quickly, precisely and efficiently in only one clamping, even if a used machine is involved. At Surplex, you can bid on revolving transfer machines and many other machine tools - used, but in top condition!

A rotary transfer machine is a metalworking tool used to manufacture small metal component parts quickly. Rotary transfer machines usually have a large indexing table with various tool stations connected to it.

Workpieces are clamped into place in a circular formation. During just one production cycle, several tasks can be carried out on multiple workpieces at the same time. The indexing table turns either vertically or horizontally, and depending on the exact nature of the process, the movement can be intermittent or continuous.

  • Switching movement of workpieces from one station to another
  • Possibilities for turning, drilling, milling, punching, spinning and stamping
  • Enables efficient production with high output levels

The indexing table containing several workpieces rotates to each tool in turn. This process allows several workpieces to be worked on at the same time — reducing lead times and cutting costs. The latest rotary transfer machines are combined with automated feed systems to further increase efficiency.

The modern rotary transfer machine can be fitted with several tools to create finished component parts during one production cycle. Among the tools most commonly used on today’s transfer machines include those for punching, stamping, spinning, milling, turning and drilling.

The first rotary transfer machines were controlled by trained operatives. However, a modern rotary indexing table transfer machine can carry out the majority of the manufacturing process on an automated basis. This is because CNC systems carry out precise tasks according to instructions from computer programs. This highly advanced revolving machine is cam-operated, which means time isn’t wasted on continually switching workpieces and reloading.

Advanced rotary transfer machines are capable of processing tens of millions of workpieces every year. They can be adapted to cope with a wide selection of operations, including threading, recessing, drilling, marking, deburring and many more. The sizes of workpieces processed by transfer machines range from just a few millimetres to half a metre.

These advanced metalworking machines are capable of processing very small component parts very quickly. It is not unusual for a large-scale manufacturing plant to employ the use of up to 12 workstations and 30 separate machining tools at the same time. Production lead times can be further reduced with the addition of three-sided processing and automatic re-clamping.

A rotary transfer machine is used widely in the mass-production of metal component parts for cars, as well as for hydraulic and pneumatic fittings. The arrangement of the transfer machine depends on the complexity of the parts being produced. Large companies — such as car manufacturers — use a custom-built revolving machine in order to mass-produce bespoke parts as quickly as possible.

Manufacturers of all sizes and types can save money by using a transfer machine as part of their production line. Before the invention of rotary transfer, several different machines were needed to process the same workpiece. Not only did this take up valuable space, it resulted in relatively long lead times and increased production costs. Small and medium-sized businesses can make further cost-savings by purchasing a used rotary transfer machine.

At Surplex.com, we specialise in the sale of used machines in countries across Europe. We often feature models from the most respected rotary transfer machine manufacturers in the World, including MIKRON, GNUTTI TRANSFER, BTB, KADIA, GOZIO, HYDROMAT and MENSI. However, if you can’t find the exact type of metalworking machinery you’re looking for, keep checking our website. We are continually sourcing industrial machines with a proven track record of production. Alternatively, you can sign up to the Surplex newsletter, and be among the first to learn about our upcoming sales events and industrial auctions.
