Without measuring equipment there cannot be sufficient quality control during the manufacturing of products. Measuring equipment includes a measuring standard, measuring device, software and reference material, or also other tools that can be used for the measuring process. It is also possible to use a combination of measuring equipment. Testing equipment is designed to test the measuring equipment and can be used independently of measuring equipment during the production process. Regulations, to which certain products are produced, are known to be used to adjust measuring equipment and test it.

Measuring equipment is characterised through its sensitivity, measuring range and its margins of error. For every type of measurement undertaken, the appropriate measuring equipment should be chosen in relation to the criteria required. In industrial production, measuring equipment is either used directly in the workplace or in a special department for quality control. There are particular criteria that need to be regarded during the manufacturing of a product, such as length, angles, time, weight etc. These values need to be monitored in relation to compliance requirements. In order to make this possible, measuring equipment was already being used at the beginning of the industrialisation. Nowadays it is essential that all production machines not only undertake their operations, but also that they are monitored. This is particularly relevant for high-precision CNC-measuring techniques.




Measuring equipment can be applied in all sectors. In the building of machines and equipment, measuring equipment is used to monitor the production and control the characteristics of the processed workpieces. Even hand workers use measuring equipment, to measure the length and angles of a workpiece. One example lies with CNC-lathes, where the wear and tear of the lathing tool is closely monitored. This wear and tear of the tool can be within a tenth to a hundredth of a millimetre. The determined values are then processed by the software and then corrected, in order to manufacture the workpiece with dimensional accuracy. If the measurement is too high, then the machine will switch out the work tool or use a removable head. This system allows for a product to be accurately replicated many times and to ensure efficient operation.

Several companies have specialised in the manufacturing of measuring equipment. Some of the most recommended suppliers include ZEISS, MITUTOYO, LEITZ, HEIDENHAIN, MAHR, ISOMA, NIKON, KELCH and ZOLLER.
